Overview

The heartwood is orangey yellow brown to red brown with darker veins and sometimes an oily surface. The sapwood is clearly demarcated. The grain is straight and the texture is fine. The grain is sometimes wavy.

The blunting effect is fairly high; peeling is not recommended or without interest and slicing is reported to be good. Requires power. Nailing is good but pre-boring is necessary. Tends to split in nailing. Gluing is correct. It dries slowly and must be dried slowly and carefully to avoid pockets moisture. Initial surface drying prior to kiln drying is recommended.

Niové is very durable to fungi and is durable to dry wood borers; sapwood demarcated (risk limited to sapwood). Presence of transition wood with a lower durability.

Niové can be used for several applications such as:

Interior: e.g. panelling, flooring, stairs, seats, high class furniture, joinery, sliced veneer, industrial or heavy flooring
Exterior: e.g. ship building, panelling, bridges, joinery, heavy carpentry, vehicle or container flooring, sleepers As the wood presents different colours, it is recommended to discolour the surface.
